Pakistan LMIS, COVID-19 and the future of Public Health Supply Chain

Dr. Muhammad Tariq is the Country Director of USAID funded Global Health Supply Chain – Procurement and Supply Management Program with Chemonics International and leading significant contributions to the National Health Security since 2009 in Pakistan. With his team of local and international experts, Tariq has created a greater realization to public health supply chains. To his credit is the Pakistan LMIS (lmis.gov.pk) designed, and deployed in the entire country, national and provincial supply chain strategies and  guidelines with sustainable financing of unprecedented scale. Dr. Tariq has resurfaced the importance of evidence, artificial intelligence, machine learning and data sciences. Dr. Tariq during his medical education in 1987 served as the in-charge of TB activities and served the people of south Punjab through a number of community-based activities and medical camps. With Population Services International and Family Health International between 1997 and 2006, Tariq was the HIV/AIDS Manager for most-at-risk-populations coordinating research, peer education, STI clinics, HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care & support of the people living with HIV and AIDS. He has the experience of managing relationships with both local and international stakeholders. In 2008, after coming back from Washington, Dr. Tariq joined the Health Ministry and developed the first branding and communication guideline of TB and TB/HIV.

In 2008-2009, Dr. Tariq was the national lead for writing the Global Fund HIV/AIDS country application and combining other components of TB, Malaria, and Health System Strengthening secured $43m for countrywide HIV/AIDS activities. This involved complex sub-country level extensive coordination with the specialized NGOs and civil society. Using the science of implementation, Dr. Tariq has established models of health service delivery, communications, HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment and integrated supply chains that has mobilized more than $350 million for the people and communities since 1986.
